If you press ALT + F2 and type:

Does it run ok?

Try running it from terminal. The output may be useful.

I'm sorry but I just can't work out how to get it running from the terminal. I'm not at all technical and have been looking up the ketboard commands and the Ubuntu help manual but just can't work out how to do it. The "super key" at the left of the "Alt" button didn't give the information either. As ever, I'm sure I'm just one simple keystroke away!!
Best regards
John

Thanks Andrew, the problem I had was in finding how to get to the command line. I eventually found it is: Control/Alt/T (and that was extremely hard for a novice Microsoft escapee simple user like me to find, although it will be second nature and too obvious to any technical person) and everything works fine now. Thank you foir steering me in the right direction - I'm grateful and I hope I can can be be in a positon to help someone else in the future
Best regards
John
