What is the output if you install it in command line?

Thanks for your fast reply.

output is >> apt://Package could not be found <<

on commandline: E: package xnviewmp could not be found (freely translated)

I assume it's not published (last step missing) and registered at the programs forum:

http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=26145

So, it's presumeably not such a bad idea to get into direct touch with the developer, since other minor issues (stoneage screenshots of the programm, version update request) were found too.

Are you trying to get a 32 bit or a 64 bit? My Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit brings XNViewMP up. A review on 09-12-2012 says there is no 64 bit.

Michael,

thanks for the reply. Your confirmation gave me the idea to klick on 12.04 in the section available version. Then I could see all the comments.

It's for 32-bit.

The description says it's "free", but...

But in the USC appears only "Buy it" --- So does this mean I have to enter a creditcard number for the amount of 0.00 US $ ???

@ actionparship:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise
Linux home-desktop 3.7.5-030705-generic #201301280206 SMP Mon Jan 28 07:17:09 UTC 2013 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

This doesn't reveal it's Kubuntu... (the main system)

But I had tried within Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity3D) which is placed on another partition of the HDD. Actually it turned out that the USC was uninstalled in the early days of installation. (It was to slow then and the checkbox was missing). Snyaptic was well enough for pure packagemanagment, like with other versions of Ubuntu before... I were used to have a textual feedback upon what's happening during the install/removal of a package. A simple progressbar (like in USC) doesn't show errors. So far for an explanation why it didn't appear.

Upon a reeinstalltion of the USC and a reboot XNViewMP appeared there. But it's still not installable in a simple manner, probably because it's "proprietary"?

Buy it for 0,00$ ???

An opposite example is KMahjjong (OpenSource & "free")

https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/kmahjongg/

Which is nicely installable even from within Kubuntu. :-)

I didnt say exuses for my error in the first play, so I do now. And thanks for your help so far.

A little more research on the topic could have shown me that xnviewmp was amongst the top10 free apps in 08/12 as written on softpedia

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Top-10-Ubuntu-App-Downloads-for-August-2012-291689.shtml

If the app says buy it for 0.00, you will not need a credit card etc. Just go for it. Your OS is multiarch, so you may pull in a few 32bit packages as deps. Not sure how many but it will install.

Excuse me:

There is no logic behind pressing a "buy" button if the software package is priceless. The leagal term is Freeware.

By doing so (should have knwon better & been sticking to my basic principals)

a new page opens "agree to payment terms" - terminated the programm. Since this does not make sense at all. It's completely illogic. A simple case of inferior software-design.

Giving it a new try after your recommondation. Now the SWC crashes, Apport opens & reports it's an old bug [1054070] which says it was fixed already for 12.04. Trying it again... now wt SWC (5.2.9-proposed) - crashes again, by surprise now w/o Apport handling the error...

My experience from my curiosity in this case sums up to:

Completely deeinstall SWC again, keep using SYNAPTIC. Rather try to find a ppa. And in terms of XnViewMP prefer taking the .deb file from the projects homepage. Report possible bugs directly to the project.

Thanks for your patience and will to help. Question marked as solved.
