how to install software in Ubuntu 12.10

You can install the software you need/want through the Ubuntu Software Center or can install Synaptic Package Manager, which is a is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command line utility with a GUI front-end based on Gtk+.

To install Synaptic just run the following commands in a terminal window:

udo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install synaptic

Do you have internet access, like in the browser? It is required to use the software center.
If you need to use your USB 3G stick to get access and it does not work, please let us know the type of it. This is best done by connecting the stick, opening the "Terminal" application and typing:

lsusb
(first letter is a small L)

Then press Enter and a list of devices will be shown. If you are able to copy the list for us it would be great. If not, look for the entry that shows the name of your sticks manufacturer (most are from Huawei or ZTE). Then tell us the 2×4 digit code with a colon in the middle positioned after "ID"! Thanks!
