after update laptop fails to boot or allow reloading OS

Asked by larrycornutt

On a Toshiba Satellite L305D S5895 (Vista from factory but running XP Pro) I installed Kubuntu (unknown verson) in an effort to get the wireless card working and intinal instalation seemed to be working very well (everything but wireless). After setup pluged into wired network doing some research still looking for answers but did like how responsive laptop seemed to be. Went for update and sent me to Ubuntu 12.? and part way through started to encounter errors and skipped loading maybe 5 update moduals (one of which I did try to report) then asked me to restart to finsh update but failed to boot after shutting down. I have tried to start from my hard drive and to re-load the Kubuntu and XP from my dvd drive again but keep getting the same results from each as follows:

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for list of built-in commands.

(initramfs) mount: Mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs faile: input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/flesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

Sorry I was not better prepared but did think everything was stable and have never hit a wall so bad that starting over was not an option. I thank you for any ideas or procedures to get me started again.

How did you install Ubuntu?

I installed Kubuntu from a a CD-R then the update directed me to ubuntu. unable to reinstall from that disk again and the XP is on a DVD-R. They have both worked recently, the Kubuntu about 4 hours before the problem started so question the idea of bad iso copy.

Try to use the boot-repair program from a Live Ubuntu CD.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair#A2nd_option_:_install_Boot-Repair_in_Ubuntu

Follow the instructions on link above.

Thanks

I have tried to run in trial mode off the cd with the same results as listed above. Did find out that power was interupted and might have still been updating but did not see to be sure. I am having problems with my dvd burner but will come up with boot repair disk to try. Thank you for helping me out and will update when tried.
