Tried to install Foxit Reader but it did not work.

Asked by Michael Lynch

I downloaded the installation packages (both the .deb and .tar.gz versions) of Foxit Reader from their website. After clicking to install with the .deb file, the software center still had an "Install" button, so I tried the .tar.gz. It still shows up as a program that I would need to install, but I have a non-functioning Foxit Reader icon in my Dash.
I am running Ubuntu 12.04.
Does anybody know how I can uninstall a program if the software center thinks it's not installed yet? Or, how I can get program installed fully?

Thank you both for you time and help. Andrew, the file was at http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/desklinux/download.php ( the link provided in the instructions provided by Warren).
