Why is maverick missing from http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/?
I can no longer use the Ubuntu Software Center in 10.10.

Ubuntu 10.10 has reach it's end of life. I suggest updating to version 12.04 LTS, which is supported until 2017 or 12.10 (until April 2014).
Unluckily even the next release in line (11.04) is end of life as well, so you have no direct upgrade pass. The best way to upgrade in your case would be to backup your data and reinstall from a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS disk.

I have moved to MINT 14 based in Ubuntu 12.10 but looks like 10.10.
