!Corrected answer!

Search box is there. Up - right .

Have a look at this picture : http://i.stack.imgur.com/cHoo7.png

If yours is not there , try to purge and install again .

~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge software-center
~$ sudo apt-get install software-center

Your sugestion gave me this output:-

tony@tony-HP-G60-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge
ubuntu-software-center
[sudo] password for tony:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package ubuntu-software-center

The software centre IS there but not the search box?
