software center package catalog error

Asked by Brian Marine

every time i start the software center it give me an error entitled " items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, do you want to repair it now?" every time i tell it to, it keeps asking me if i want to. this all started after trying to install xubuntu-desktop. also on a side note, for an older laptop would you suggest gnome-3, gnome-2, unity, or xubuntu-desktop?

Please carefully follow the steps as described in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure with the only exception that in step 6 you should not create a new question, but continue in this current thread.

There are several small errors on your system.

Andrew has already requested information to get the grub problem solved.

You have the canonical partner repository in two sources, you should issue this command to clean that up:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/precise-partner.list

And the last problem related to xubuntu-desktop is an incompatibility between xubuntu-default-settings and mythbuntu-default-settings. You can have installed only one of these two.

The incompatibility between xubuntu-default-settings and mythbuntu-default-settings (they both install a screensaver configuration file) can be overruled with the following command:

sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/xubuntu-default-settings_12.10.7_all.deb

After that
sudo apt-get install -f
should be able to install xubuntu-desktop.

You should sort your Grub config if:

sudo update-grub

Still gives errors

I am a bit astonished that all the problems should already be solved.

If you have not aready changed it, then there are errors in your grub configuration file that will cause problems with future updates.

As far as I know in the file /etc/default/grub the screen resolution must not be written in '<<' and '>>' brackets.

So the lines in your file should read:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1440x900-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap"
instead of
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=>>1440x900-24<<,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap"

and
GRUB_GFXMODE=1440x900-24
instead of
GRUB_GFXMODE=>>1440x900-24<<

You should change the file accordingly with the command
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
and after that issue the command
sudo update-grub
