software center package catalog error
every time i start the software center it give me an error entitled " items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, do you want to repair it now?" every time i tell it to, it keeps asking me if i want to. this all started after trying to install xubuntu-desktop. also on a side note, for an older laptop would you suggest gnome-3, gnome-2, unity, or xubuntu-desktop?

There are several small errors on your system.
Andrew has already requested information to get the grub problem solved.
You have the canonical partner repository in two sources, you should issue this command to clean that up:
sudo rm /etc/apt/
And the last problem related to xubuntu-desktop is an incompatibility between xubuntu-

The incompatibility between xubuntu-
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/
After that
sudo apt-get install -f
should be able to install xubuntu-desktop.

You should sort your Grub config if:
sudo update-grub
Still gives errors

I am a bit astonished that all the problems should already be solved.
If you have not aready changed it, then there are errors in your grub configuration file that will cause problems with future updates.
As far as I know in the file /etc/default/grub the screen resolution must not be written in '<<' and '>>' brackets.
So the lines in your file should read:
GRUB_CMDLINE_
instead of
GRUB_CMDLINE_
and
GRUB_GFXMODE=
instead of
GRUB_GFXMODE=
You should change the file accordingly with the command
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
and after that issue the command
sudo update-grub
