Linux is a very good environment for programmers.

You will need the compilation tools for the language of choice and a suitable IDE. If you tell us what language you want to program in then we can advise how to install the required tools and advise on an IDE.

Be warned that because of the wide choice you may get lots of different opinions. I personally do most of my coding in C and use eclipse.
