You can open word/excel files in Libreoffice which is default installed. What else do you need to know?

if you want to run GUI apps from the terminal that's fine, you can use:

libreoffice filename

and it will open.

For this matter you need to repair word docx

http://www.repairdocx.docxrepairtoolbox.com repairs the structure of DOC, DOT, RTF and other formats, converts this data into clean files
