Commercial Antivirus for Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Rodolfo Lucas

Hi. I'm looking for a commercial software antivirus for Ubuntu 12.04. The only antivirus I've found was McAfee for linux, but when I tryed to install I couldn't get. So I checked the required system and I saw that it is for Ubuntu 11.04. Could be this the problem? Anyone knows another commercial antivirus for Ubuntu 12.04?

Thanks.

Hi Rodolfo,
If you are looking for a personal antivirus to keep your computer from getting viruses, you don't need it!
The reason why linux and macs dont need antivirus software is because they are based on the unix kernel, which is very secure. Virus programs for linux (such as ClamAV and McAfee) are usually designed to prevent the transmittance of microsoft viruses.

I've heard in a few communities about Linux doesn't need any antivirus. But the truth is if you ask to anybody of the information technology area, they'll answer you that any system needs an antivirus software, including mac like I read a few weeks ago.

And I guarantee that none system is 100% secure. This is a fact.

The reason I've posted this questions is that Mcaffee has an specific antivirus for Linux, but I couldn't install trial version. If anyone try do download, could tell how I can install a package .tar.gz?

@Lucid:

Please do not come arround with such mythos. It is correct that you need in many cases not really a antivirus. But latest when you go in advances with executing software from non Canonical sources(or scripts or...) you should increase the probalitity to keep your system integrity. Beside this with virustotal and other file gathering sides the definitions files go wider and also in the unix/linux domain. Really have cases of malware are also known on linux. For this we have the genuine linux tools rkhunter and other(chroot?!).

@Rodolfo:

I do not know macaffee installation, but this do also the work:

http://www.avira.com/en/download/product/avira-free-antivirus

On their website in also a unix/linux manuall with installation advices. When you have small experients with linux it is tricky.(I can not give further advices here -> to much).

Only one more hint: To make your ready installation working finally, you have to download separetly a key file(also free for linux) and copy it itto the avira directory over the old one.

Good luck.

Think of that there is a support offer from canonical(payed, but moderate). They can guide you step by step.

I'd like to thanks Lucid Luna and Melchiaros by the discussion here.

The solution is the McAfee for linux. This is the commercial antivurus software.

I'm having troubles install the trial version. So, I'm going to open another topic for this specific problem.

Thanks all.
