Can I move all or most of my add ons & settings to Ubuntu

Asked by Steven Sylvester

Hello Everyone
from a very warm Norway
I am English and have lived here for many years.
Afraid the years are catching up with me!
I am not to good on forums so thought I could ask the following here before downloading umbuntu

Firstly I hate windows for many reasons? I do run win 7 home premium.but I already run libre office;Foxit pdf,VLC,
my browser is Firefox 13 beta(i think) as I have an add on called test pilot which is helping FF with development.
my laptop is a 2009 Dell studio 32 bit.

OK! I wish to ask the following,Just how many add ons, plugins can i transfer/continue to use if I migrate to umbuntu?
For example would my Firefox remain the same with all the add-ons and plug ins?
which are as follows:-

ADD-ONS:-

SAMFIND BOOKMARKS
ADD COOKIE OPT OUT
DOWNLOAD STATUSBAR
EBAY BUTTON
FOX CLOCKS (WORLD CLOCKS)
GMAIL WATCHER
GREASEMONKEY
LAST PASS (PASSWORDS)
IM TRANSLATOR
NO SQUINT (ZOOM)
QUICK NOTE
THEME & FONT CHANGER
lIST-iT
eBAY BUTTON

PLUG-INS:-
JAVA
FLAS
SHOCKWAVE
PICASA (PHOTOS)
VLC
FOXIT READER

OTHER-PROGRAMMES:-
IMMUNET 3.0
FIREFOX13
SPYWAREBLASTER
AVG TUNEUP
PICASA 3
DOCUMENTS(WIN TO LIBRE)
WIN RAR
PICTURES
LOGITECH MOUSE
UTORRENT

DELL WIRELESS SETTINGS WHICH IS LAN

I know some of these are not critical but also some are very good/useful and have a lot of personal settings
Hope I can somehow keep FF and all it`s settings/add ons e.t.c.

all help very much appreciated
Please feel free to just ammend my list with a strike out or a note to make replies easier

best wishes Steve

The OS is called Ubuntu, not umbuntu.

I suggest you run the liveCD and add the addons. Running that amount of addons will make Firefox bloat more than it already does. Shockwave is Windows only so you will lose that for sure.

Picasa has been dropped from Linux but should run in Wine.

There are many native torrent clients for Ubuntu, so utorrent wil simply become something else (transmission is installed by default) there is a utorrent for Linux but it is only accessible via web UI and it is not simple to install. I wouldn't bother with it.

RAR is handled by fileroller once you install rar and unrar packages from software centre.

You will be able to get all of your firefox settings back if you save them properly. The Windows programs and plugins and addons will not migrate - get these after you have set Firefox up. The other programs are specific to Windows. Most of them you will not need or there are Ubuntu replacements. Your Windows documents will all be able to be read by Libreoffice more or less OK. Formatting may be odd in some, and you may want to back up all the Windows fonts first in case you want any of them.

The really important thing is don't assume any of your data or settings will be safe. Make sure you can restore everything. Also, boot from the live-DVD and take the option 'Try Ubuntu' before you install to make sure everything runs properly on your machine.

Steven, about your Firefox preferences, you can go to edit>preferences>sync and set it up. I don't know how much of your data is synced with this approach, but you can check it with a live version of Ubuntu like Andrew said. Just set the sync up in Windows, run an Ubuntu liveUSB, configure sync in Ubuntu, and see if all your stuff is in there. If it's not, you will have to manually add what's missing. All your add-ons should work on Ubuntu.

You don't need Spywareblaster, Immunet, and AVG, as you won't be susceptible to Windows malware with Ubuntu. You can install Java, Flash, VLC, and Rar right from Ubuntu Software Center. There's a version of uTorrent for Linux, but Ubuntu comes with Transmission, which is also a very nice Torrent software; as to Foxit Reader, there's also a Linux version available, but Ubuntu also comes with a pdf reader, Evince; and Shotwell is the default Ubuntu picture manager and should substitute Picasa. Your Wi-Fi and your mouse should also be detected automatically by Ubuntu. If it's not, we're here for you! =)

But don't wipe Windows out straight away. You may need it for now in your transition. In the Ubuntu installer you have the option to install it alongside Windows. It should be your best option for new users.

Enjoy your freedom with Ubuntu! Cheers!
