I am trying to access my work server from my home PC with Ubuntu which I recently installed, how do I do this?

What are you wanting to do on the remote system. Often the desktop isn't needed....

applications/internet/Terminal Server Client is a starting point, rdesktop from the command line gives you a little more flexibility in some areas. Both work fine for me connecting to a local VMWare machine running windows XP (you need to ensure remote access is turned on for the Windows box).
