Are 64 bit versions of Ubuntu truly 64 bit

Asked by peterzay

Are all processes running on 64 bit Ubuntu truly 64 bit? With Windows, they are not, some are 32 bit even though the OS is 64.

Are all packages from synaptic also 64 bit when you download to 64 bit Ubuntu?

Any program that is open source will be built as a 64 bit binary. That's almost everything, except some proprietary programs, eg flash.

the 32->64 bit transition is almost trivial under linux, as the source code for most things is available.

You can run 32bit applications in 64bit Ubuntu too, but it gets messy.
The applications from the repos for a 64bit Ubuntu will all be 64bit. You can still install 32bit Windows applications in 64bit wine.
