I suggest installing the following, newer version

2012-03-08 18:07:06 UTC google-chrome-stable 17.0.963.78-r125577

using the following PPA:

http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/google_chrome

Or you could simply skip this and install chromium-browser instead....

chromium-browser is in the Ubuntu repositories and it's what I like to use....

The URL link I gave you, already explains in detail how to install google-chrome-stable

The Terminal output that you sent us, seems to imply that you are using the 32-bit version of Ubuntu.

If you are already using the PPA I mentioned, then you can simply run the following 2 commands in a Terminal to upgrade the old version of google-chrome-stable to the newer version:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install google-chrome-stable

And run these commands if you prefer chromium-browser :

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

I do not think you need to uninstall google-chrome-stable

Thanks again Mark,

Sorry I am still new at using Linux but would like find out a lot more about it......can you advise me were I can learn more.

Although I did the following:-

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

 It seems to have worked and I checked updates after the above and 38 files were installed a few minutes ago including Latest version: 17.0.963.78-r125577 I saw in terminal.

I seem to still have Google Chrome....

Thanks

Documentation
=============
I recommend reading through the Ubuntu Manual, it's very informative:

http://ubuntu-manual.org/

Click on the "download Button" to download the latest PDF version."

Also suggest reading the Ubuntu pocket guide that you can get here (it is FREE!):

http://books.google.com/books?id=kHLlJzI6L20C&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q=&f=false

No need to buy a paperback edition, because this Google Books version has great search features and is fully available online and free.

For example: do a search for "apt-get" in the Google Book edition of the Ubuntu Pocket Guide.
