Ubuntu & VirtualBox for Excel

Asked by Charles Harris

Hi folks

I use Excel a lot in Windows7. I am now going to run 11.04 and would like still to use Excel (as I share with a lot of other Excel users)

Is the VirtualBox system ok for this. using Excel in 11.04 etc. Do I download this using Ubuntu ? is it straight forward to setup.

Thankyou

You can use Excel in Virtualbox, You will be running both Windows and Ubuntu at the SAME time but yes it can be done.

There is a package in the repositories, or if you need USB support you need to download the proprietary version from virtualbox's website, as ubuntu does not ship this. You will need a windows CD and key.

The only tricky thing will be transferring files between host (ubuntu) and guest (windows). You will be able to connect using shared networking from guest->host under the default configuration, but it is a little trickier the other way around.

You can use virtualbox shared folders, but I have never set this using windows on ubuntu.

you can use the program called libreoffice calc in ubuntu. it's equivalent to excel and can read and wirte excel files. if you don't use the fluff that comes with excel 2007 and 2010 (i.e. bar graphs inside a cell), you will have no problem with using calc.

Might be easiest to go with Librfecalc. I am not needing all the fuffly stuff.

Thanks and regards
