install downloaded program: Meta Trader 4

Asked by John Bain

Hi all, I have installed Ubuntu 11.10 to give it a try however I would like to install Meta Trader 4 which I have downloaded to

the download file but do not know how to proceed to install the program.

As you will gather I am not a computer geek so any help must be extra simple.

Is there an app that I can install that will install programs I download?

Am I too dull to use Ubuntu ? would I be better sticking with windows?

Any help appreciated folks.

John

What file(s) do you have?

You aren't to dull, you just haven't used the OS...

Hi actionparsnip,
I have the icon on my desktop which is "mt4setup.exe" ( /home/john/Desktop/mt4setup.exe)

As you will know with windows all I would need is to click the icon and program would be installed. I assumed that this would be the case with Ubuntu, or at least something very similar
I would like to get it sorted as I do like the os so far
John.

You can't run Windows programs (.exe) on Ubuntu.
Maybe there is a Linux version for that. For Ubuntu, program files are ending with .deb, I think.

Or use Wine. (www.winehq.org)

Hi Kevin, Thanks for info I installed Wine and got things working but still got a few bugs. think I have the beta version and might be better with version 1.2 . I will give it a try and see how it goes.
Thanks to all for your help no doubt I will be back again soon with more problems till I get the hang of this O/S
