GPS requires Windows or MAC OS to register and update.

Asked by KeithH

Have a Garmin GPS model 1100LM with lifetime map updates. Their web site only has Windows or MAC OS based software for updating maps and registration. Is there a work around that I can use to load map updates or register my GPS?

Tried to copy and past commands in the blog and got these results:

keith@keith-laptop:~$ /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules
bash: /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules: No such file or directory
keith@keith-laptop:~$ SYSFS{idVendor}=="091e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="23cb", MODE="666"
SYSFS{idVendor}==091e,: command not found
keith@keith-laptop:~$

Now, any other ideas?

why don't you just run the page through one of those online translators?

Used Google translator with these results:

Garmin Nuvi 1240 Navigator
I recently purchased this GPS navigator. I liked it because it was small and I could carry in addition to use in the car.

So far I tenid chance to try it in a couple of occasions and I must say that meomento working properly.

This entry, however, is to deal with potential problems that may cause to be connected (via USB) to Linux.

The first step I have taken is to modify the file:
/ etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules

to add the following line:
SYSFS {idVendor} == "091e", SYSFS {idProduct} == "23cb", MODE = "666"
On the page there's more info, and in this one, too. In addition, I created account (usual) on this forum, that looks interesting (it has a section where he talks about the backup).

This has been sufficient bonusstars, connecting the browser, Ubuntu recognizes it and mounts it automatically.

So far so great. The problem comes when I take a backup of the contents of the browser (about 2.1GB are code and data). Whether I try from the command-lina and if I do from the GUI, the process hangs when copying data takes a while. Garmin seems as if the block a file and not allow copying. So far I have not gotten to know it can be and have not found any reference Google ...
I have to try from a Live, or commented on the last line ...

Seems that the results were not successful.

Its a file to edit, not to run, so running:

 /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules

Will not work as it isn't a binary, nor does it exist, it is a file to CREATE. I thought:

"but there is a file to make with a line to add"

Was PERFECT english but you failed to even follow that.....

I am sorry that I don't know how to edit the file that is mentioned in the blog. I am looking for some help so I can do this. I am not a programmer or a Lynux expert nor have I claimed to be.
The Garmin software in question is a windows .exe file and it runs the Installation program. Is there a way to emulate a windows system for this to install?

It's a text file, nothing more and nothing less. I'm VERY sure you can copy and paste text...

If you run:

gksudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules

Then add the line....

You have now editted the file. It's nothing to do with knowing an OS. It's a text file which is OS independent.

Can you help with this problem?
