"without being told error or something" Exactly what error?

Out-of-the-box Ubuntu can't play MP3s unless you install: ubuntu-restricted-extras

The MP3 file is not royalty free so you can't play them on a default install.

Though this is easy to get around see here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

However, that should not stop you from downloading.

If you can't download how are you trying to download. It could be that the website is blocking you for legal reasons based on where you live. Try going somewhere where you know there is no such blocking such as

http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/wswf

and try to download by clicking the link with the right mouse button and selecting save as. If that doesn't work we need what the error message is. If it does work and you still can't download the music you want then it would help if we knew where you live (only country required, I'm not planning to send you a Christmas card) and what site you are trying to download from.

What you are trying to download is not music its a down-loader for windows and it won't run on Linux. It may be possible to convince it to run under wine however.

There appear to be a number of down-loaders available for use with this site. Typing "bearshare for ubuntu" in to Google I got many links two are

www.fileguru.com/apps/bearshare_for_ubuntu

and

http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/bearshare-for-linux.html

I can't vouch for either of them though as I have not used them

You've downloaded a .exe file which can be used, on Windows, to install the Windows program BearShare. You might be able to run this program on Ubuntu using Wine (Ubuntu can run *some* Windows programs). If you wanted to do this, then you could search for it at http://appdb.winehq.org/ to see if there's information about whether or not, or how well, it works. Even if there is no information about the application there, you could still try running it. Just make sure that you are downloading it from somewhere that you trust; while there is currently no known live malware targeting Ubuntu and other GNU/Linux systems, there certainly is plenty of live malware targeting Windows, and if you run/install a Windows program on Ubuntu that is infected, the malware could potentially run on your Ubuntu machine.

To run a program with Wine, you'd first install Wine (search for "wine" in the Software Center and install it), and then you'd right-click on the .exe file of the program you want to run and click "Open With Wine" or "Wine Windows Program Loader".

However, you should really not attempt to run BearShare on your computer. It has not been developed for quite some time, and there is software that runs natively (i.e., not requiring an emulation layer like Wine) on Ubuntu, that provides similar functionality. BearShare was a gnutella/gnutella2 client. You can search for information about more such clients on the web. I would suggest gtk-gnutella (go to the Software Center on your Ubuntu machine and search for it), or FrostWire 4 (old, but I think not as old as BearShare, and it was one of the most popular gnutella/gnutella2 clients because it worked very well; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frostwire).

If you consider BearShare to be more suitable to your needs than those options, you might want to consider using Shareaza instead. Like BearShare, Shareaza is a Windows program. But it is still developed.

The advice I've given you in this post about software you can use to download music does not constitute endorsement of any possible use to which you might put the software. It's your responsibility to determine what content is permissible to download and to upload to others in your legal jurisdiction. You should be aware that some uses of gnutella/gnutella2 software may fall afoul of your copyright laws.

Checked on Wine site BearShare does not run under wine, You will need a Linux equivalent. See post from Eliah for possible alternatives
