I do not know my Ubuntu password for authentication

Asked by Sharon

I am not a tech savvy person. My computer crashed and I lost everything. A friend of mine in IT fixed everything and installed ubuntu v. 11.10 for me. So far so good, except when I try to download apps it asks for authentication. My friend says he did not set up any passwords and I cannot figure out where to go to set up a password. Passwords and keys does not help. I have looked online and found something that says go to "system" "preferences" "about me" and click "change password". I cannot even find that. Can anyone help me with this?

I dont know to much about this stuff just thought i comment. if there is already an authentication password on it im sure you wont even be able to change it with out knowing it. Im pretty sure you have to set an authentication password when you first install ubuntu so if there is a password and you cant change you may need to uninstall ubuntu but dont listen to me i would not say i am exactly knowledgeable on this just browsing through.

Please tell your friend to ALWAYS set a password or s/has directly generated the problem. Not only are blank passwords dumb but you will not be able to perform admin tasks.
