Upgraded from 10.?? to 11.10 a while back - now have no root privileges! What did you change my root password to?

Asked by zipperer

I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.??? to 11.10 about a month back via the software center- which took several hours. Decided to add new hardware and software recently and lo and behold my root password does not authenticate! Apparently it has been changed to something else, but what? Do you have a default password that you set the root to? And why was it changed.

Your password should not have changed but it is now the case that blank passwords are no longer allowed

You can reset your password see here:

Got the error message: "Authentication token manipulation error." and password remains unchanged. Fortunately I am still able to use my non root user and password to at least use what I already have, Will try the Live CD/USB route when I get back my live USB I already have. Or [erhaps try another Linux distribution?

Didn't work directly but gave me a good starting point and enough info to change the permissions on my regular account to be a super user. Many thanks for the assist.
