how to install apps

I am running ubuntu linux 11.10. I have downloaded a couple of apps. one was hardware lister.After it downloaded it asked if i wanted it installed and put in launcher.I said yes to both. after it was over i clicked on it i launcher Nada, nothing happens.What am i doing wrong or not doing? I am a newbie. Thanks,Joe

That program is broken in as much as it's a gui program that requires sudo access but doesn't ask for it. There's no point putting it in the launcher as a sticky because it has to be started from the command line with sudo eg:

gksudo lshw-gtk

The program is also incomplete, since it can only list hardware that is on the mainboard, or provided by the chipset on the mainboard in some cases. I suggest you remove this program and just use the command line lshw instead: eg:

sudo lshw | less

Try installing some other programs, I think you'll be fine.
