Why do software packages such as Adobe Reader 9, appear in Ubuntu 10.10's "Software Center" downloads, in an apparently non-consistent fashion? Is it true important software such as Adobe Reader, appears in a semi-random basis? Who is to blame?

Asked by Richard Pan

10.10 Ubuntu does not offer Adobe Reader 9 or 10, at the "Ubuntu Software Center" in a consistent fashion. Who is to blame? Important software should appear in "What's New" independent of Ubuntu release.

For standard packages such as Adobe, is it better to install through the "Ubuntu Software Center" or get direct downloads from vendor websites?

Thank you for a careful answer.

Using the packages from software centre will enable them to be updated as part of normal upgrades. If you use external sources which do not match up with the names in the packages, you will not get automatic updates and you will need to check the sites to be sure you are up to date
