Ubuntu Software Center takes a long time to load

Asked by Charles Pergiel

It takes 20 seconds to finish loading. It takes a couple of seconds before it even acknowledges that you have clicked on it (in the column of icons along the left hand edge of the screen). Then the icon flashes slowly for another eight seconds or so before a window appears on the screen. Then another ten seconds or so before it finishes loading.

Is this really the future of computing? Faster and faster processors and ever more memory so I can sit around and wait for the stupid machine to collect all it's ducks from the far corners of virtual memory?

This smells like the work of a committee.

That is rather slow. What are your computer's specs? Specifically, what processor do you have an how much RAM do you have? Which Ubuntu release are you running? Have you searched to see if any bugs have been reported about this?

(Please note that bug 875968 does not effectively report this issue, for the reasons I indicated in that bug. While you could attempt to create a bug yourself from this question, if you are going to report a bug, it would be much better for you to report it with "ubuntu-bug software-center" or, even better, by invoking ubuntu-bug with the PID of the running software-center process. If you do report a bug, please make sure to read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully and also search for existing bugs first, and after reporting it, please link it to this question with "Link existing bug" on this question page.)

That's a reasonably fast machine, so I think it would be reasonable for you to file a bug against software-center in Ubuntu about the slowness (as I mentioned before, please do search first to see if this has already been done, and also please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs if you have not done so already).

The bug might get ignored for a while as low priority, and it might ultimately get marked Opinion or Won't Fix, but it also doesn't take a whole lot of effort to file, so if you feel like doing so, I would encourage you to go ahead and file it. Doing so might also lead to the problem being fixed, at least for the next release (which will be an LTS release, so it would be great to have these little things improved for it, as many people will be using it for many years).

Can you help with this problem?
