Unable 11.10 to install Opera 11.51 Browser

Asked by Ivan Ratoyevsky

Hello,

I have Ubuntu 11.10 Oneric Ocelotte ( 64 bit version) installed on my DELL Studio 540 machine and its very very good but have come up on a new problem. Which is I cannot install Opera 11.51 (its the official linux _x86_amd64 version package) I have downloaded the package a number of times from the mirror download sites and end up having the same problem. The package for Opera is downloaded into my /home/username/downloads folder.

However, when I try to run (install) the browser it returns the following error. "Internal error cannot open package" This happened at least 3 or 4 times each time. I have checked the folder permissions on the download folder and its set to "read & write" but I notice theres no execute permission I'm wondering if this is whats missing as it would kind of make sense.

Therefore the question is how to I re-set folder permissions to allow Opera to be installed via the software center. I'm only guessing this might be the problem but am not entirely certain.

Any help on this would be much appreciated. NOTE: I had Opera working with Natty (32bit).

Thanks Ivan

I put the file in my dropbox to make it easier to give the command.

Hi Andrew,

Your reply appreciated a lot, sadly the problem is I'm only back in my home office occasionally (as looking after elderly parent), Yes! wonder if using Terminal commands would work better I just forget I could have done it that way. I'm sure you might be right on that one.

I will take a screen capture and give those commands you've given a go. I wont be able to comment back for a few days unfortunately. But appreciated anyway so many thanks.

Ivan

No need to screen cap. Just copy the text generated instead. Much quicker and easier

Still worried that even copying the commands into & running a terminal session wont fix this problem if my guess (diagnosis) is correct and it IS a file permissions problem.

** Im saying this because after initially installing 11.10 I tried to update & install the latest canonical recommended ATI Radaeon graphics drivers but when the OS tried to download & install & activate them that process failed too. So wondering if there is a file permissions issue somewhere in the system which is preventing quite legitimate 3rd party packages from successfully being installed. But where I wouldn't know? and thats another problem for me being a Linux novice.

It will download and install the deb. It's a simple procedure.

Can you help with this problem?
