how do I fix "segmentation fault" in Ubuntu 10.04?

Asked by Curt

Here are error messages when I start Picasa. Worked fine until update with Update Manager. Some other programs are also affected.

/usr/bin/picasa: line 139: 9989 Segmentation fault "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper check_dir.exe.so

/usr/bin/picasa: line 175: 10084 Segmentation fault "$PIC_BINDIR/wrapper" regedit /E $registry_export HKEY_USERS\\S-1-5-4\\Software\\Google\\Picasa\\Picasa2\\Preferences\\

/opt/picasa/bin/picasa: line 139: 10310 Segmentation fault "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper check_dir.exe.so
/opt/picasa/bin/picasa: line 175: 10406 Segmentation fault "$PIC_BINDIR/wrapper" regedit /E $registry_export HKEY_USERS\\S-1-5-4\\Software\\Google\\Picasa\\Picasa2\\Preferences\\

How do I correct these? Would install from disk fix it?
Thanks,
Curt

I updated to Ubuntu 10.04LTS with update manager; nothing works now. Cannot find printer, cannot find any sound system or movie system, or any Wine programs including Picasa; many other peripheral programs; and other minor programs which are not important. My questions: Should I reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from a disk? Is that what caused malfunctions? It seems like every time I update through Update Manager, everything actually regresses! Please advise.
Thanks, Curt

The first Ubuntu I installed was 7.04 Feisty Fawn. I have updated from there with Update Manager only. Do I need a fresh install?? Is that where the problem lies?
Thanks,
Curt

@Curt
I have moved this to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu, which--as Benji York says--is the correct place to ask and work on questions with this topic.

See https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+question/163827 (specifically, post #5). That will probably enable you to solve your problem. If not, please post a reply indicating what happened instead when you tried that.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Curt for more information if necessary.
