You can use gwget, the GUI frontend of wget:

sudo apt-get install gwget

the browser add-on called download status bar is pretty good.you can pause and resume downloads. it will let you resume a download after you shut down your browser accidentally or your computer crashes. however, if you're looking for something that speeds up downloading by pulling down multiple parts of the file simultaneously, the addon isn't adequate.
