The file is an .exe file, which is a windows software file. To run these you will have to install wine (install it from the software centre), and then use wine to run the exe file that way.

The above solution by Paul Stewart WILL NOT work.

You are looking for Tor, a free alternative to Expat Shield that will run on Ubuntu.

1. Open a terminal window (probably by pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[T], using the Unity dash to search for "terminal", or in classic desktop, Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal).

2. Input the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubun-tor/ppa

3. Enter your password. Note that the keys you press will not show up on "[sudo] password for (your username): "

4. Input the following command:
sudo apt-get update

5. Input the following command:
sudo apt-get install tor

6. Type in "Y" for "Yes, I want to install these software."

7. Start on Step 2 of here: https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en#polipo

chmod +x /tmp/DM-232.exe; wine /tmp/DM-232.exe

Will install the app (if it is compatible with wine)

I do not under stand what you(actionparship) are saying and if you read what Deltik said it is not going to work with wine and it did not work with wine.
need to find out what I am doing wrong on step two

oem@freekbox:~$ /etc/polipo/config
bash: /etc/polipo/config: Permission denied
oem@freekbox:~$ /etc/polipo/config
bash: /etc/polipo/config: Permission denied
oem@freekbox:~$ ~/.polipo

The files are config files, you open them in a text editor.

I haven't actually tested any further than my own steps.

These steps theoretically should get you through the setup of Tor, step 2:

1. Press [Super]+[F2] ("Super" means "Windows Key")

2. Input: gksudo nautilus

3. Enter your password. This time, you will see what you input.

4. Now that Nautilus has loaded, select "File System" in the sidebar on the left.

5. Navigate into "etc" and "polipo". If "polipo" doesn't exist, create it.

6. Create a blank file (right-mouse click >> Create Document >> Empty File) only if a file called "config" does not already exist.

7. Call that file "config".

8. Open "config" even if you didn't create it.

9. Replace all the contents of "config" with what's here: https://gitweb.torproject.org/torbrowser.git/blob_plain/HEAD:/build-scripts/config/polipo.conf

10. Make configuration changes as desired. From what I see, the configuration appears to be fine for what you want to do.

Like I explained before, "You are looking for Tor, a free alternative to Expat Shield that will run on Ubuntu."

You do not appear to be accustomed to Ubuntu. What operating system did you use before you used Ubuntu?

As for the [Super]+[F2], alternatively, you can enter the command (gksudo nautilus) in a terminal.

Ok Deltik, I obviously misread something, or was too quick to answer. I thought they were exe files, hence they could be run under wine. Is that not correct?

@Paul Stewart: Expat Shield is Windows software, but what it does is tunnel the computer's Internet connection through a proxy in the United Kingdom. There is no way that WINE can support it; bottles are too limited. I think that the closest Linux alternative to Expat Shield is Tor.
I have absolutely no experience with Tor, however. If you could help guide Bob to get his proxy configured, he can then stream BBC from the Internet. (It's a regional restriction thing; that's why he needs the proxy.)
An adaptation of this guide for Ubuntu would be helpful: http://hurwi.net/blog/?p=28

@Bob: Since I don't know anything about Tor, I can't help you with that right now, but I do have another idea for you to allow you to watch BBC One. It's by using something in Ubuntu called "Network Proxy".
Please standby while I research this solution.

Alright, Bob, I do have a solution.

1. On the bar on the left (Unity launcher), find the icon called "Applications".

2. Search for "Network Proxy".

3. Open "Network Proxy".

4. Create a location with whatever name you prefer, like "United Kingdom" or "Great Britain".

5. Do a "Manual proxy configuration".

6. Configure an HTTP proxy with an IP address of a proxy in the UK and the corresponding port.
WARNING: There is a problem. These days, so many people use public proxies that the vast majority of them are too slow for streaming video. You may want to consider subscribing to premium proxy services.
Here are some sources I found and glanced at:
http://www.freeproxylists.com/uk.php
http://www.proxz.com/proxy_list_uk_0_ext.html

6.1. Let's say that you wanted to use 109.123.70.47:80. Enter "109.123.70.47" into the URL box of "HTTP proxy" and "80" into the port box. Your connection has immediately been set up.
DISCLAIMER: That is an actual UK proxy at the time of this post, but it is much too slow to stream BBC One.

7. Once your proxy connection is set up, you can watch BBC live at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/watchlive/

Alternative solutions (in order of increasing price):
- You can have someone help you get Tor set up. (should cost $0.00, as far as I know)
- You can subscribe to a paid proxy service. (It's $8/mo here: http://www.proxz.com/subscribe.html )
- You can subscribe to this service: http://www.tvproxy.co.uk/ (€7,42/mo for a year)
- You can purchase Microsoft Windows and install it onto your computer so that you can use Expat Shield [NOT RECOMMENDED! YOU'LL GET MAJOR HEADACHES FROM USING YOUR COMPUTER. SERIOUSLY.] (At least $200 one-time payment)
- You can move to the United Kingdom. (may exceed $50,000, as far as I can guess)

@Deltik,

Thanks for the explanation. I went online and had a look at expat shield. I assumed a bit too quickly that being an exe wine would do the trick..not this time.

I do use TOR, and will see if I can help figure out what Bob needs to do. I am no expert at it though..:)

Thanks for your time.
Paul

Expat Shield is a good solution for those wanting to use BBC iPlayer. I use it all the the time to watch sport from the UK or my favourite program Top Gear. I watch full HD programs from the BBC using expat shield without a problem, it's also free. The only issues I have with expat shield are that it must be run under a Windows OS.

On the weekend I bought myself a new toy (Mini ATX mainboard PC from Asus, 640 HDD, 4GB RAM, Intel i3 CPU, Win764bit OS)

Ran the install of the OS, loaded Firefox + Adblock Plus, then loaded expat shield and added it to the list of trusted programmes in Windows Defender. Later I added Avira Free Antivirus software, not before. Avira does not seem to like Expat Shield. I happily watched Formul One on Sunday and Top Gear in Full HD.

In an ideal world I would run Ubuntu 64 bit with either Tor or Foxy Proxy. The reason I run Windows is for simplicity sake, yes I know it's not the best OS available but for the sake of install and to get it up and running quickly without spending an age reading about how to config the latest C file it's the best solution.

The only drawbacks are Licensing and having to install either a firewall or some good antivirus software and then keeping those up to date Windows = Money (Easy) Ubuntu = Free (need a geek to configure it) Most people have never heard of BASH and wouldn't know where to begin.

I'm open to discussion on this topic and would welcome any straightforward scripts for installing TOR and watching BBC iPlayer.
