Which webcams are compatible & where can I buy them in Ireland or online?

Asked by Susan

My Logitech STX won't work, neither will the Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 I bought. That one installs an icon but nothing is accessible ... Am I missing something? Looking for a reasonably priced webcam that works with this system and how to install it -- Help! Thanks.

Hi Susan,

What ubuntu version are you using? Both of those cameras should work on 11.04.

Thanks

Hi again...what is the output of

lspci -v

if you type that in a terminal?

Yes, it's 11.04 and the first one definitely doesn't work and looks like not the second either -- the disc won't play, only an icon appears on desktop and then I can't access any of the files. Since I'm very new to this system, I'm wondering if there's something else I have to download to install, but shouldn't it automatically download?

Sorry, but when I type in that code in a terminal, can't find the output! Has a lot of information but states under capabilities "access denied" to everything!

Susan,

try sudo lspci -v, and then type your admin password.

Susan,

I searched google and found this forum that discusses the Microsoft camera. However they are using it on the ubuntu feisty, not natty.

Paul,

Thank you for your help. I read through the website and seems to me it's just not so easy to get webcams up and running on this system. I'm not a computer freak and just like systems to work for what I want them for, so think I'll just switch back to XP altogether! Also, the webcam they are talking about on the site is not the same version I have, but I'm just too frustrated with the whole thing now. Thanks, anyway!
