Installing Flock

Asked by Mary Pratt

I've asked this before, but I never got a clear answer that worked. Right now the file is called "flock-2.6.2.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2" and it is in my "Downloads" folder. Can anyone tell me how to install it? I would prefer that you not just give me a link, as I have tried a good number of them in the past, and today.

Thank you.

Download the .deb from here: http://www.getdeb.net/app/Flock

RIGHT click the .deb and choose "Install with Gdebi"

I tried to do this, but it said "Can not find package 'Flock'". Where is the .deb if it is downloaded because it's not in my downloads folder.

The source code (the .tar.bz2 file) is meant for developers or advanced users only.

To compile from source you need to install a compiler, any software that this software requires to compile, and you then need to fix any small differences between their program and your system.

When a deb is built, all of these little differences are resolved (by hand), and the final .deb provides a much easier way to install the program.

If you still are sure you want to build from source, please post back here; otherwise Arochester's solution should work.

I don't want to do it from source, but Arochester's solution DID NOT work. It says:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/killian/f.lux/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/killian/f.lux/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

It did not download like a normal download, and came up as if I was installing an update.

As a note, I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook.

You can use Arochester's advice but FIRST you must run:

cd; wget http://archive.getdeb.net/install_deb/getdeb-repository_0.1-1~getdeb1_all.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./getdeb-repository_0.1-1~getdeb1_all.deb; rm ./getdeb-repository_0.1-1~getdeb1_all.deb

Then you can use the link
