Don't know how to categorise applications into folders

Hi guys,

I've installed Ubuntu before, a while ago. With Linux I always get a bit software greedy. I have loads of applications under "Science", and I want to organise them, say, into the sub folders like in the software centre (biology, chemistry, etc). I know last time I eventually figured out how to create folders, name them, attach icons and move files to them, but I can't figure out any of that this time. I can't even find the applications file in the file tree from the home directory. What am I doing wrong?

You can make subfolders in the menu and move the icons around as you wish

Ok, but how do I make subfolders? Right-click isn't doing anything.

Did you run alacarte like I said:

You can use the New Menu button there (Which is what I meant with new subfolders when I initially replied)

Oh I see, sorry, I overlooked the launch alacarte bit. How do I find it? I search in software center, it calls it main menu and says it is already installed. But when I run a search for it it comes up with nothing.

Its part of a default install. Just press ALT+F2 and run:

alacarte

You can run it from System > Preferences > Main Menu too.

you move things around by dragging items in the middle pane into menus in the left pane. you can make the appear and disappear by clicking the check boxes in the appropriate menus.
