Most of the categories in Software Center are empty

Asked by Massimo Di Marco

When I enter in the Ubuntu Software Centre and choose any category of software (for example Internet / Web Browser) I find it completely empty: no software in it; while in Office I just find Adobe Reader 9, and nothing else, I find nothing in Games, in Graphics, in Multimedia etc ...
Now, if I search, I CAN find any program: that means that repository are working fine, but if I try to surf the categories I find nothing.

Hope someone can solve my problem. Thanks in advance. (and sorry for my bad English)

Do the categories in Synaptic work? (System --> Administration --> Synaptic Manager) This looks like a bug in Ubuntu Software Center itself.

Yes, the categories in Synaptic work very well. The only problem is in Ubuntu Software Center.

Also if I expand "Get Software" and select the voice "Provided by Ubuntu" the count on the status bar tells me 32201 items available, and I think these are all packages that should be categorized, but they aren't. The only packages I can find surfing categories are those marked under "Canonical Partners" and a few more!
(I'm always talking about Ubuntu Software Center: as I said Synaptic works fine)

Which Ubuntu version?
Maybe try via CLI:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure software-center

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
