I guess nobody can _guarantee_ a completely smooth and problem-free upgrade from one version of an operating system to another one. You can of course reduce the probability of problems by adequate preparation. An important step that is too often neglected is checking the release notes of the new version - if your hardware meets the minimum system requirements, and if there are known issues with your equipment.

Please check with https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes

Especially the known issues with nVidia video cards have turned out to be a crucial point for several users trying to upgrade to ubuntu 10.10

Another important item is to have ones system up-to-date and flawlessly running with the previous version. If you already have problems in the 10.04 version with the system not behaving in the right manner (e.g. frequent crashes etc.) you should try to get these problems cleaned up first, before you attempt an upgrade. In any case you should apply all recommended updates to your current version, because this can help avoid problems in the upgrade process.

If you are confident that your system does not have problems and known issues, then you should just take the plunge and start the upgrade. Several thousands of users have already done so with success (including myself).

Additional hints about the upgrade process can be found on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaverickUpgrades/

P.S.: can you put your other questions to 'solved' as soon as one of the answers has provided a solution?

Can you help with this problem?
