For editing, mixing and other track based modifications, audacity is very good, and is available in the repositories.

For midi, I am less familiar with, however there is a list of soft-synths here:

Have a look at Audacity. It could fit your needs.

if you do a lot of editing, you might want to get ubuntu studio. it has a slew of multimedia apps and is optimized for such things.

Thank you guys for the answers. I was thinking that in Linux there would be something in the likes of Sonar for the Windows community or Logic Pro for the MacIntosh. Don't know if Ubuntu Studio has similar capabilities. Really appreciate your response.

hi, folks. my sound is back. the alsa mixer hid under multimedia, and most channels were muted.
