I go to the softw C, I enter installed software, for instance I want to remove an installed package, I click it, nothing happens, no authentication pops up...

sudo apt-key adv --recv-key --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 40976EAF437D05B5

Will fix that, you have added a ppa but not added the key

hallo mr mrs actionparsnip, I did just what you told me, but the thing is not resolved, I can still contact to Software Cantre, but not remove or install, clicking there does not give any reaction, in the Kpackage, the reply is shorter and now says :you have failed to provide correct authentication please check any passwords or account settings..... and going to the detail only says now : failed to obtain authentication,

thank you so much

Hallo Mr Mrs

When running the first command I get lots ending with :

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/rhythmbox/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/rhythmbox/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

After running the second command you gave me I get :

piet@piet-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get -y upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
piet@piet-laptop:~$

Another help from your side would be great,
Piet Vietnam

ok then that PPA does not have a maverick PPA and should be removed via software centre. This may help.

OK it's not in there but this should do it:

sudo ppa-purge ppa:webupd8team/rhythmbox; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Should remove it

hallo, done all that, but the result remains unchanged,
when I try Softw C or Kpackage - I still can't get anything or remove anything
outcome in terminal ends like this :

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/rhythmbox/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

connecting to the programs through Softw Centre or Kpackage is possible, but getting programs or removing programs is not, I'm not asked to provide a key and in the Kpackage response I get :
failed to get authentication - where should I start to solve this ? - and as a second question I was wondering if I could not better just reinstall 10.10 altogether and if so how should I be doing this ?

can anyone help me with this ? I'M STILL ON ABOUT THE SAME QUESTION, when I go to the upgrade Manager I get the following, so something is badly wrong

W:GPG error: http://tw.archive.ubuntu.com maverick-updates Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <email address hidden>, W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/rhythmbox/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/rhythmbox/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

perhaps I could just reinstall my whole 10.10 and if so, how do I do it from the net

You'll need a maverick CD to reinstall
