internet connection in ubuntu software center how to set the proxy

Hi
I am unable to download softwares from ubuntu software centre(10.04) .It is giving me an error message Check your internet connection.
i tried typing
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update
in the terminal and i thing it is giving an error 407 proxy authentication required.
pls tell me how do i set proxy authentication settings
the entire output is as follows

How are you connecting to the internet? Are you using a proxy ? If you are, did you set it in any other place than Firefox?

There is also a general setting for a proxy. You can find it in System>Preferences. That's worth trying to enter your proxy settings there also.

You are the second person having this kind of problem here. Unfortunately, I was unable to solve the problem for the other person, so that's the best I can propose unfortunately. Seems weird that it's so difficult to set up a proxy, but as I'm not using one, it's maybe more complicated than I thought. Sorry not to be able to help you any further, I hope someone else will help.

I have already answered to question like this so please tell:
- Are you in a campus or organization with proxy...?
- Using Firefox can you browse/download/access without error to a link such as:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/universe/source/Sources.gz ?

if yes, try to create and set a proxy value into the /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/proxy open a terminal and type:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/proxy

Put a row in it, here what i have in my proxy file, i don't use user and password:

Acquire::http::Proxy "http://192.168.1.40:3128/";

If you must authenticate with user and password try:

Acquire::http::Proxy "http://proxy_username:proxy_user_password@ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/";

You must also set, write them at the end of your $HOME/.bashrc:

export http_proxy="http://ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/"
export ftp_proxy="http://ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/"

or

export http_proxy="http://proxy_username:proxy_user_password@ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/"
export ftp_proxy="http://proxy_username:proxy_user_password@ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/"

if you are under a Windows Domain network you must install and configure ntlmaps or cntlm
 ntlmaps - NTLM Authorization Proxy Server
 cntlm - Fast NTLM authentication proxy with tunnel

Well im not sure exactly but i think the department of computer science keeps the updates and the synaptic manager takes the updates from there.
we had to type the following commands in the terminal to do so
 sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.original
 sudo wget --no-proxy http://csea.iitg.ernet.in/services/ubuntu/sources.list.d/sources-lucid-csea.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list
and we were good to go.

Hi, I'm from IIT Guwahati and i had the same (407 problem) in terminal
@Krishna K I have done the things u have specified above , after doing that
my synaptic package manger is not working and the 407 problem in terminal continues to exist.
Please help me out !
