Por favor, pulsa alt+f2 y escribe lo siguiente:

  gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

El contenido del archivo de texto que te salga lo copias y lo pegas aquí y ya te ayudamos a corregirlo.

Hay un espacio después de gedit y antes de /etc/apt/sources.list. Para que no haya problemas, puedes copiar y pegar la línea directamente en el cuadro de texto.

Hola de nuevo.

El fallo se produjo por algo relacionado con Virtual Box. A lo mejor has sido tú intentando seguir alguna guía de algún sitio o ha sido culpa de algún componente del sistema. Estaría bien que lo identificaras para saber por qué ha ocurrido.

Para solucionar tu problema: Vuelve a pulsar alt+f2 y esta vez escribe

  gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Te pedirá tu contraseña. Verás el mismo archivo, solo que esta vez puedes editarlo y guardarlo. Bajas casi hasta abajo de todo, y borras esto:

wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/sun_vbox.asc
-O- | sudo apt-key add -
# deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lucid non-free

Luego guardas y cierras. Con eso ya deberías haber solucionado tu problema.

Jorge, ya hice lo que me indicaste de borrar esas lineas, pero el
problema persiste, al abrir el centro de software todo parece normal,
en la parte de abajo dice 34,235 elementos disponible, pero si trato
de abrir cualquiera de los departamentos por ejemplo el de Ingenieria
o el de oficina inmediatamente se pone en blanco y dice que hay 0
(cero) elementos disponible.
si hago clik en software instalado vuelve a decir cero elementos disponibles.
Lo mismo sucede si hago clik en Suministrados por Ubuntu, Socios de
Canonical o PPA for Ubuntu en el recuadro de Obtener programas.
me vueve a dar el mensaje original de " No se ha podido inicializar la
información de los paquetes

Ha ocurrido un problema imposible de corregir cuando se inicializaba
la información de los paquetes.

Por favor, informe de ésto como un fallo en el paquete
«update-manager» e incluya el siguiente mensaje de error:

Estimado Jorge, como estoy nuevo en Linux y estoy empezando a emigrar
de Windows, en ésta lap top tengo también instalado windows Vista,
¿consideras apropiado mejor volver a instalar el Ubuntu para corregir
el problema?, (de hecho no tengo todavía archivos creados en linux,
apenas empezaba a abrir archivos copiados de windows entonces tengo la
partición prácticamente vacía)
y si volver a instalar fuera la solución más practica te agradecería
me lo indicaras. te comento esto porque antes de aceptar bajar los
plug in para poder abrir el archivo con Adobe Reader, baje el
Openoffice en español pero no se instalo porque me salio un recuadro
de que no era compatible con el sistema instalado y simplemente
cancele la instalación pero no supe hacer nada para eliminar el
archivo que había bajado de la red y a lo mejor eso contribuyo al
problema.
Honestamente ya estoy cansado de Microsoft y quiero emigrar a Linux
aunque sé que me va a costar trabajo acostumbrarme y conocer la manera
de trabajar con Linux y sus programas, en particular yo uso un
programa para calculo de iluminación que se llama DIALUX y algunos
programas de calculo solar como el Hommer de las cuales no hay versión
en Linux por eso no puedo emigrar totalmente sin embargo voy a emigrar
de una manera u otra.

Sekibul, te agradezco tu respuesta, me llegó un poco tarde pues la semana pasada tomé la decisión de reinstalar de nuevo el Ubuntu Lucid, y desde entonces ha estado funcionando muy bien en todos los aspectos en lo que lo he usado, tan es así que ya lo instalamos en otra computadora de escritorio y tambíen funciona perfecta( y vamos por más en la oficina).
Aunque no puedo encontrar todavía un programa para cálculo de iluminación como el Dialux en Linux o el calculador solar Hommer, por lo que estoy pudiendo hacer con Ubuntu en todo lo demás, estoy feliz de haber tenido "la locura" de emigrar de Microsoft. (aunque por éstos dos programas tengo a Windows en una partición)
Como te habrás dado cuenta, soy otro de tantos neófitos en computación que necesitamos todo digerido y sistemas a prueba de "horrores" por parte de usuarios "aplasta teclas".
Se me hace gratísimo encontrar una comunidad de apoyo con gente noble y desinteresada como Tú y tantos otros que tratan de mantener el mundo LIBRE.
Reciban mi sincero agradecimiento por su colaboración todos.
