ubuntu software centre empty

Asked by Joe Beall

I was trying to uninstall/re-install my Cairo-Dock and somewhere along the line I seem to have nuked my repository so that there are no apps available. Even the installed apps don't show up in the Software Centre although they still work OK. I'm running 9.10 and was wondering if I could restore my Software centre from the CD (CD is actually for 9.04 but I updated to 9.10 online). Any ideas?

Hi.

Could you open up a terminal and copy/paste (control-shift-c/v) the output of this command? It will open a new window:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Hi Chauncellor,
The output of that command was: bash: gedit/etc/apt/sources.list: No such file or directory
joe@joe-desktop:~$

Hope this helps but I'm tempted to just re-install Karmic from the CD but was wondering if there was a quick fix.

J

There is:

I am assuming you are from the U.S. PLEASE don't follow these steps if you are not, instead tell me what country you are from!

Please follow these steps exactly if you are:

1) In a terminal, type in 'gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list'
2) type in your password
3) Copy and paste the following block of text into the text editor that pops up (starting with the # symbol and ending with 'multiverse'. Do not include the separation marks I made):

## This sources.list was manually created as the old one was somehow deleted

---------------------------------

4) Save the document and exit.
5) paste this command in your terminal:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

6) type in your password (you won't be able to see what you type, the cursor will not move)

This should bring your computer back to normal. It might take a while for step 5 to finish as the system is upgrading all your software (like firefox).

Let me know how it works out!

Hi Chauncellor,
Sorry to put you through the wringer here, but I got antsy and formatted my HD and am in the process of re-installing Win XP (I was dual-boot) and will try to re-install 9.10 (from the CD) after I've got Windows settled down. I appreciate your efforts here and thank you very much!
J.
PS-I'm actually located in Canada so I don't know if that would have made any difference to the solution.

That's too bad. This would have fixed you right up.

Oh, well, glad to be of service anyway :)
