help speeding up downloads

Asked by Robert McCollough

I'm still new to Ubuntu and setting up my system. I would like to know if I can decrease the download time it takes when I am downloading software, programs, etc.

I have built my own pc recently and would really like to start tapping into its potential. The only os I currently have is Ubuntu 9.10. I have been trying to get vmware working so I could load the software that came with my components but am having difficulties.

My new system consists of the following: Intel i7-870 CPU, MSI Big Bang Trinergy MB, 60Gb SSD, 1Tb HDD, 4Gb GSkill RAM, 9800GTX VGA, 9600GT VGA along with some other extras.

I would greatly appreciate any help.

most download speeds are managed by the sender. some may be slowed down by your access speed . i have a 10gb access and at times i download at 175 kbs but from other places i download at 1.1 mb . it depends on the senders speed and usage at the time.

and you need to select the best server from where you are downloading packages....follow the method i am giving...
open synaptic>settings>repository....it will open new window select first tab ubuntu software>download from...select other from the drop down window>choose Select best server click the tab ....let your system find out which is the best server for you.....at the end of the process click choose server.
That should fix the problem.... and other thing is your internet plan what you have taken from ISP.... I have a 2Mbps connection usually get a speed of over 241 kbps
Warm regards,
Rajinder
