Could not download all repository indexes

Asked by Ian Heads

Hi,
I can't download anything from the software centre - it says "not available in the current data". After reading of the answers on the forum, I went to System>Administration>Software Sources. I changed "download from" from "United Kingdom" to "Other". The clicked "Select Best Server". This then ran a test to find the best one.

After selecting the best server for my location, I tried to download "CD with Ubuntu 9.10 'Karmic Koala' - Officially supported Restricted Content". I then click on "Close". It then provides me with a pop-up which says:

"The information about available software is out-of-date - To install software and updates from newly added or changed sources, you have to reload the information about available software. You need a working Internet connection to continue."

I click on "Reload". Then another pop-up screen appears which says:

"Downloading Package Information - The repositories will be checked for new, removed or upgraded software packages".

At this point, out of 55 files, it keeps getting stuck on number 52. It then comes up with:

"Could not download all repository indexes - The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

I've repeated this process about 5 times. Please help, I'm new to Ubuntu and down have a clue!

I'm not sure why, but it seems to be working now. I tried restarting my laptop and it works... Same as Windows, 95% of problems can be solved just by restarting the computer. Hummm....?

You didn't mention if you've followed the advise.

You may consider to switch to 'main server'.
In case comment out a faulty (outdated) repository url from sources.list.
You can also check an url in sources.list manually by pasting it in browser url bar in order to see web status.
In case you may comment out lines about 'Ubuntu CD' or just unmark it in GUI, because CD (repository) is outdated after installation of course.

To get some details about what happens, you can use CLI instead of GUI interface.
