How does one change the log-in graphics on the log-in screen at boot?

If you are using Karmic (9.10) the short answer is - you can't. Note, I believe there may be some How-Tos on the internet, but it is non-trivial - and probably NOT worth the hassle.

If, on the other hand, you are using 9.04 or earlier, just click System / Administration / Login Window - then click the Local tab, and click on the theme you want - or click Add to install a new one.

I am not sure that is what you meant but it is worth avoiding changing unless you really must lol. Well i had troubles with it but my graphics cards is obselete.
