Go to System > Administration > Synaptics Package Manager and click on reload. This is a known bug in karmic.

I tried doing that but at this point, out of 55 files, it keeps getting stuck on number 52. It then comes up with:

"Could not download all repository indexes - The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

I've repeated this process about 5 times. Please help, I'm new to Ubuntu and down have a clue!

Can you change your mirror in Software Sources and see if it works?
