How can I reinstall snapd without losing my snaps?

I tried taking a sledgehammer to a snapd issue [1][2] as follows:

    sudo apt purge snapd snap-confine && sudo apt install -y snapd

However, after doing this I can't `snap run X` any of my old snaps. It looks like I'm going to have to reinstall them.

Is there a safe way to reinstall snapd, without having to reinstall all my snaps?
