But surely the location could be a hidden directory?

Snaps are supposed to make Ubuntu easier for non-techie users, not harder, and putting this data in a standard directory under $HOME does not pass the grandmother test. If I put snaps on my grandmother's machine, she is going to think there is a virus called snap in her Home directory. Users are going to drive sysadmins mad by accidentally deleting their configs.

Why not use .snap if snap's hybrid config data means the usual options (.local/share, .config) are unsuitable?

I hope someone will think about this again.
