A little user update...

I'm still with Ubuntu 20.04, I completely purged snapd and my Firefox is installed as .deb. Still, every now and then Firefox creates ~/snap/firefox, meaning that the thing is now becoming somehow hardcoded or at least impossible to completely get rid of.

I recently became less annoyed about this issue, I think I understand better what the real topic is. We're complaining about the usage of Linux $HOME but this is not the old Linux anymore, it's more Android or iOS. Nobody opens bug complaining about directory structure in Android, do you? Nobody cares how big the Android Apps are, or where exactly they are installed, as long as they can access the camera and upload to Instagram. Nobody complains about the output of df under Android. And IMHO Ubuntu has taken this path, and if you (and I) have the 'ls' output of $HOME as priority then switch to standard Linux.

I don't consider this a bug anymore, it's a design feature of the new way of distributing software, and I think it will never be fixed because Snap is not about having a nice $HOME folder nor respecting the UNIX folder conventions from 1970. The bug is in our expectations.
