Jerky play back in smplayer

Asked by yasas

After updating to karmic beta, i'm experiencing very much jerky play back in SMplayer. Mostly it happens for the avi, mkv, wmv, mpg file types. Virtually i can not seek the player, if i do then the video freezes and need to stop the play back.

in jaunty i didn't had this type of issue with media play back except for matroksa files. But after installing the xine player jerky play back of mkv's were disappeared in jaunty. But i karmic beta, even xine player freezes after seeking to forward.

after some google search i saw some people have said downgrading the gstreamer codecs will solve this temporarily. If it is true can you please tell me how to.
need a help here guys.

Have you installed ad configured your graphics driver in Karmic? Does it happen in other players?

Can you provide te output of:

sudo lshw -C display; uname -a; lsb_release -a

Thanks

1.) I haven't manually installed the ATi- X1100 vga driver for ubuntu.
How ever most the compiz fushions are working.

2.)Well Movie player is acting normal. There is no jerky play at all, but after seeking the file it freeze for about half a second and playing continues normally.

3.)Here is the out put you've ask for

sudo lshw -C display; uname -a; lsb_release -a
[sudo] password for yasas:

OK if you run:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

do you see text or is it an empty file?

You could populate it with this to see if you get a display, Karmic has pretty much shunned xorg.conf which makes it hard to set video drivers:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=618361

You will be wrestling that file until you get a nice display.

pardon me, but can you tell me what i should do exactly cause i don't have any idea what steps i should take to configure my video card.
And by the way is it because of the vga driver or the codecs.
when i had jaunty there were no issues like this.
These all started after i upgraded in to karmic.

Hm, I'm having the same problem... smplayer will stop the playback after hitting left, right and then pause twice. After the second pause command, it will show a few frames and then stop. After that, it won't respond to pause; pressing left or right will maybe fix it, maybe not. I use mplayer instead at the moment because it's not affected by this.

Its the radeon drivers and settings. ATi support is still a lot flakey, you may have to find xorg.conf files to use to add settings.

Can you help with this problem?
