Sound does not work in smplayer in Kubuntu 10.04

Asked by tdn

Hi

When I open a video in SMPlayer the video plays fine, but there is no sound. I have tried with several different video formats.
When I open a sound file (ogg, mp3, etc.) it simply does not play.

As far as I know SMPlayer uses mplayer internally, so I tried playing the same files in mplayer -- it worked fine.

Please note that this happens to ALL sound/video files. And several of the files worked just fine before I installed 10.04 (I used 9.10 before).

I have tried starting smplayer from a terminal to see if any error output is printet, but there is only this line:
QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: No such file or directory

I guess that is not related.

I forgot to state the question. It is, obviously, "How to I make the sound work in SMPlayer".

It sounds like the audio output driver you have setup for smplayer doesn't work. Mplayer works because it is using a different output driver.

When I upgraded to 10.04, my pulse audio got borked and I had to reinstall it.

To change your audio output driver in smplayer:
Go to Options and choose Preferences.
In the General section select the Audio tab.

Try changing the output driver and see what happens.

To see which audio output driver mplayer is using, run this command:
 cat /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf |grep ao

Can you help with this problem?
