Installing Skype 4.3 on Ubuntu 14.04.2 with Kernel/LTS Update

Asked by Халид

Hello, I've recently updated my Ubuntu installation from 14.04.1 to 14.04.2 and installed the Utopic LTS Update, it removed many packages and Skype was one of them. Now when I try to install Skype 4.3 I get an error that libqtwebkit4:i386 isn't installed, I tried to install the package manually and I gotten the following message:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libqtwebkit4:i386 : Depends: libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 or
                              libgl1:i386
Depends: libqt4-opengl:i386 (>= 4:4.5.3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Apparently the current multi-arch libraries didn't point to the new xorg utopic update.
Thanks.

Utopic is not LTS. Utopic is only supported til July this year. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019.

How are you attempting to reinstall Skype? What steps are you taking?

Since Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS Point Release, Utopic Kernel and XOrg was released as LTS Hardware Enablement Stack(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes) which is installed by default on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and for users of Ubuntu 14.04.1 (Which is an LTS release as well) use this command:: sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-lts-utopic libegl1-mesa-drivers-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-utopic

I re-install Skype by downloading the official AMD64bit package from Skype's Official website as I did before the latest point release.

What message do you get if you try manually installing libqt4-opengl:i386 ?

Apparently it depends on 14.04.1 package not the newer packages...

Again, what steps are you taking to attempt to install Skype?

Did you download the deb and try and install that, or are you using the version in the partner repository?

Can you try installing libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-utopic:i386

Actionparsnip, I get the deb from the official website, the partner repo said it depends on skype-bin, not to mention that before the newest point release I used the one from the website not the partner repo.

Manfred Hampl, here's the output:
$ sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-utopic:i386

ok, the simple command does not work, what do you get if you try adding the other packages as well

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-utopic:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-utopic:i386 libegl1-mesa-drivers-lts-utopic:i386

If this does not work either, then apparently some additional modifications on the hwe-lts-utopic packages are required. I think the bug that you commented on should help.

I tried what you suggested and this all I got. looks like the new point release is still in complete or something.

Last time.

How are you trying to install Skype?

Did you download the deb from the Skype website then attempt to install that or did you enable the partner repository and install using Software centre?

actionparsnip, as I mentioned, I installed it through Skype's website, not the repository. I never install Skype from the repository. I also tried the repository but it gives me the following output:

Should do it.

actionparsnip, the problem isn't mainly in Skype's package, it's rather that Skype depends on the multi-arch libraries that seems to be absent in 14.04.2.
