Problem with installing Skype on Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit
cannot install Skype on Ubuntu 12-10... I've tried picking up the file from Skype website (and opening it with Ubuntu Software Center), or using the command line:
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install skype
In both cases, there is some problem with the package, that seems to be damaged...
can anyone help me?
in ubuntu 12.04 32 bit worked fine... should I switch to the 32-bit version of 12.10?
Thank you

I'm using 12.10 and using skype 64 bit version which is downloaded from the internet. You try the following steps.
1. Download 64 bit version from the skype official website (download Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit).
2. dpkg -i <file name>
I'm sure you're getting the error message at this stage. You update us the exact output that you're getting while you executing this command.

ok... the terminal says that there are some packet that were automatically installed, and that i shoul remove using apt-get autoremove; the packets are the following ones:
lib32asound2 lib32gcc1 lib32stdc++6 libc6-i386
can I remove them safely?
Thanks once again.
Lettura elenco dei pacchetti... Fatto
Generazione albero delle dipendenze
Lettura informazioni sullo stato... Fatto
I seguenti pacchetti sono stati installati automaticamente e non sono più richiesti:
lib32asound2 lib32gcc1 lib32stdc++6 libc6-i386
Usare "apt-get autoremove" per rimuoverli.
0 aggiornati, 0 installati, 0 da rimuovere e 0 non aggiornati.

From the message I can understand that, you didn't install the dependency package ia32-libs. Do the following steps.
1. sudo apt-get purge skype
2. sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ; sudo apt-get install ia32-libs-multiarch
3. dpkg -i <downloaded skype file>
Then provide me the output. I think this will resolve the issue.

thanks Sabin,
I'm sorry, but I can't install these two packages: if i install ia32-libs the terminal tells me that
"I seguenti pacchetti hanno dipendenze non soddisfatte:
ia32-libs : Dipende: ia32-libs-multiarch ma non è installabile
E: Impossibile correggere i problemi, ci sono pacchetti danneggiati bloccati".
("the following packages have dependences not satisfied
ia32-libs : Depends : ia32-libs-multiarch but it is not installable
E: impossible solve the problems, there are blocked damaged packages")
if i install ia32-libs-
Il pacchetto ia32-libs-multiarch non ha versioni disponibili, ma è nominato da un altro
pacchetto. Questo potrebbe indicare che il pacchetto è mancante, obsoleto
oppure è disponibile solo all'interno di un'altra sorgente
E: Il pacchetto "ia32-libs-
(the package ia32-libs-multiarch does not have available versions, but it's mentioned by another package. This may suggest that the package is missing, outdated or that it is avalaible only fron another source.
E: the package "ia32-libs-
Sorry for this communication problem!
Thank you

In some cases similar problems of other people have turned out to be caused by a mis-configuration of the package management system related to multiarch support.
Please issue the following commands and copy/paste all output:
dpkg --print-
dpkg --print-
If the first comand does not show any output, and the second one gives "amd64" you shouly try the following commands
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
and then again
sudo apt-get install skype
