Did you upgrade directly from 10.04 to 11.10?

That isn't supported, you neededto upgrade to 10.10, then to 11.04, then to 11.10

The only time leapfrogging is supported is LTS to LTS releases, so 10.04 to 12.04 (which is out in April) is fully supported and advised.

I suggest you clean install Oneiric to fix your mess.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to assist me. I shall probably wait until April and install the new release.
